Our Instructors
Staff Instructor - Carl Rubino
In Carl's words, “My own photography is greatly influenced by
impressionist and abstract painting, and by the portrayal of the
subjective, rather than the literal. My goal is to use photography
to create an interpretive, artistic expression that falls somewhere
between a “traditional” photograph and a painting, and to do so
using techniques that are primarily “in-camera” using compositional
choices and techniques such as reflected light, longer exposures,
selective depth-of-field and movement of the camera during the
exposure, to produce my interpretation of what it is I see, feel and
hear before me when I view my subject. I take great pleasure in
sharing my knowledge and experience in helping others to express
this range of sensations in their own work.”
Carl began as a student at API several years ago, where he rekindled
a love for photography that was put to rest many years prior. With a
dedication to the medium and plenty of hard work, he became not only
a fine photographer but also a trusted assistant to our instructors
during many API workshop programs. Since that time Carl has grown in
his leadership and teaching abilities to the point where we feel his knowledge, passion and
excitement in helping others make him a great instructor for our
workshop participants.
Carl’s work appears frequently in local and regional galleries and
juried shows, both in group shows and as a featured artist and in
solo exhibitions in and around Burlington, VT as well as in Lake
Placid, NY and other North Country venues, and has been published in
Adirondack Life. Carl also teaches workshops in photography at Lake
Placid Center for the Arts in Lake Placid, NY and at the Shelburne
Art Center in Shelburne, VT. He is represented by Burlington City
Arts in their Art Sales and Art Leasing programs.
