Carl Heilman II has been photographing
the wilderness since 1975, working to capture on film both
the grandeur of these special places, and the emotional and
spiritual connection he has felt as well. His passion for
spending as much time as possible in some of the wildest
regions of the Adirondacks, soon became a life-long quest to
create images that record the essence of a true wilderness
experience.
Carl's photographs have been published regionally and
nationally in books, magazines, calendars, and advertising
literature. He has had numerous photography exhibitions
throughout the upstate New York region. He has won awards
both regionally and nationally for his calendar photography,
including an Individual Artistic Award from the Adirondack
Park Centennial Committee and an Adirondack Heritage Award
from the Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks
in fall, 2001 and an award from the regional Nature
Conservancy chapter in 2004.
Carl's most recent books include, 'The
Adirondacks' by Rizzoli (2006), 'Backroads of New York'
(Voyageur Press 2007), 'Our New York', (Voyageur Press
2006), and 'Wild New York' also from Voyageur (2005). Carl's
first coffee table book, ‘Adirondacks: Views of An American
Wilderness', was published in June, 1999 by Rizzoli
International Publications, Inc.
Carl also leads intensive weekend and day-long photography
workshops. These experiential workshops include a variety of
topics related to both panoramic and standard format
photography - both digital and film.
