World-class instruction, incredible Adirondack beauty...
Some of Nature’s most spectacular beauty and solitude are
reserved for the landscape at night. The indigo sky is dotted with
multi-colored stars and brilliantly beaming planets. The moon
launches itself into its trajectory. And the Adirondack landscape,
varied and beautiful in daylight, becomes evermore mysterious and
enchanting at night. At night, the camera allows us to record
phenomena we are physically incapable of seeing. Long exposures
capture celestial objects in motion, creating metaphors for the
passage of time and seasons. The photographer can’t be sure what he
or she will create, and that’s part of the allure and the
excitement!
Night photography specialist Mark Bowie will demonstrate techniques
to record unique images digitally and on film of this
little-explored facet of the landscape: determining nighttime
exposures, shooting long exposures, timed intervals, double
exposures, and “painting” with artificial light. He will discuss
shooting exposures only seconds long to eight hours, with tips on
recording the Adirondacks' mountains, woods and waters with the
night sky, photographing star trails, planets, moonlit landscapes, lightning,
fireworks, city lights and the Northern Lights. Mark will also
illustrate how new digital sensors featuring low noise at high ISO
settings offer photographers new possibilities for shooting
nightscapes.
Come expand your image-making beyond daylight shooting, creating
images that evoke the majesty, the awe, and the wonder, of the
Adirondack landscape at night!
All skill levels welcome. Participants should have a basic
familiarity with their camera’s features and operation. Mark
prefers to shoot night images in Manual exposure mode and encourages
participants to become familiar with doing so with their camera
prior to the workshop.
