Adirondack Winter Weekend
February 9-12
Lake Placid, New York

with Mark Bowie

Overview

Winter in the Adirondacks is a beautiful, magical time. And in the Lake Placid Olympic region its beauty is legendary. Snow quiets and simplifies the landscape, accentuating lines and form. Portraying it artistically in photographs requires special attention to composition, exposure and processing. Through both indoor instructional sessions and outdoor field sessions, we’ll examine compositional and digital processing techniques to create expressive wintertime images that resonate with emotional impact and meaning. We’ll explore strategies to take advantage of different lighting conditions, and study the landscape to discover its photographic possibilities. Mark will also lead nighttime field sessions, demonstrating tips and techniques to capture diverse and otherworldly images of this little-explored facet of the Adirondack landscape.

Digital capture offers photographers more creative possibilities than ever before. Our indoor sessions will cover digital cameras and features, efficient image database management, RAW conversion and image optimization in Lightroom and Photoshop, and mutiple exposure techniques, including layer masks, panorama stitching and High Dynamic Range image making.

Possible field destinations include Whiteface Mountain, the High Peaks region, Cherrypatch and Connery Ponds, the Ausable River, the Cascade Lakes, the Saranac Lakes, and the villages of Lake Placid and Saranac Lake.

Indoor sessions will be held at the Northwoods Inn in Lake Placid.
