Overview |
|
Award-winning photographer and writer Lisa Densmore
leads this unique workshop on how to turn an experience
in the field into a magazine article with accompanying
photographs.
While there are many writers and many photographers, few
have the ability to combine these skills effectively.
At the same time, magazines, newspapers and book
publishers frequently desire writers who can also shoot
(and vice versa).
With good writing skills, a photographer improves the
chance of having images published, and gains more income
per article. In
this workshop, you will learn how to get your ideas into
print. |
|
|
|
This is a
hands-on indoor workshop.
Each person will bring an
article idea and supporting images to the classroom
where they will turn them into an article-photo package
for presentation to a specific magazine.
|
|
|
|
In the
morning, the class will first learn basic principals of
writing for publication, such as how to create a strong
lead, use of sidebars, active verb usage, first person
versus third person formatting, and how to quote.
You will also learn how to
format the written word for submission.
You will have the chance to
examine some of Lisa’s manuscripts and articles from a
variety of magazines to gain a better understanding of
the writing process.
Then you will draft your
article with Lisa’s guidance.
|
|
|
|
After lunch,
the class will look at different types of article-photo
formats to learn what works for publication and what
does not.
Lisa will review acceptable
formats, image sizing, number of images in a submission,
black & white versus color submissions and the latest
trends in the editorial photography business.
You will gain a better
understanding of the difference between fine arts images
and editorial images, with a concentration on what makes
a good editorial image.
Then you will select images
to submit with your article.
|
|
|
|
The workshop will conclude with tips
on how to query an editor and other details of the
submission process.
|
|
|
|
The class will
have the option of including their manuscripts and
accompanying images in a “class magazine”, to be sent to
each participant after the workshop.
Each magazine will have a
personalized cover letter from Lisa with specific
suggestions for that person.
